This piece of jewellery - Fairy Fruit- comprises of five hand chased copper redcurrant leaves nestled between spheres of deep red garnet beads.
Fairy fruit has a history of being terribly enticing to the mortal soul, but as I'm sure you know, it is not wise to eat it! It's said that by eating fairy fruit, the consumer may become trapped in the fae realm and not be able to return whence they came.
In the 1926 fictional novel 'Lud-in-the-Mist' by Hope Mirrlees, a sleepy town of sensible folk; far too grown up for talk of fairies, is beset by an onslaught of smuggled fairy fruit from the enchanted lands across the border. Slowly, perfectly respectable inhabitants for the town are turned to madness by the succumbing to eating the berries. Or perhaps their eyes are simply opened to that which we like to ignore.
To me, this theme of consuming fairy fruit is the idea of opening our minds to the truth, to remaining open to all in the world that is "childish" fantastical or awe inspiring.
