These methods include Chasing and Repoussé, which were used to craft artefacts such as the Iron Age Battersea Shield. Connect with the natural world by using organic materials to create a personalised piece of art.

Spend the day making copper shadow puppets inspired by folklore of the British Isles. Work with fire to heat and soften your copper to prepare it for decorating and cutting out. Use a range of different metal tools and hammers to create texture and pattern on your puppets, bringing your characters to life. Then gather around the fire in one of our atmospheric Iron Age roundhouses and watch your designs come to life.

Craft a decorated copper arm cuff in the style of Viking jewellery. Discover how to use the technique ‘chasing and repoussé’ to make simple patterns on a band of copper, which will later be formed into an arm cuff. Work with heat, hammers and a variety of metal tools to create your designs. Learn about pitch, an important material used in chasing and repoussé as well as a tried and tested recipe to make it.

Enjoy a mindful crafting session at Butser Ancient Farm by making a carrier of light! Create a copper flower tealight holder in a historic setting. Experience hammering sheets of copper and get creative by adding beads as decoration. A wonderful intergenerational workshop, children aged 10 upwards can participate in the workshop (please note they must be accompanied by an adult with a ticket to the workshop as well).
